Why I became an editor
I studied human geography at university, although my love of reading could just have easily led me down the English literature route, and during this period I truly discovered my passion for the written word. Encompassing wide ranging subjects, including international relations, macroeconomics, geopolitics, gender, and other social politics, I gained an appreciation for the effective structure and delivery of arguments on topics broad in scope and continually evolving in nature.
I hoovered up all this new information about the world, and how we have arrived at where we are today, but in doing so unwittingly became fervently engaged with the manner in which this information was conveyed, whether through formal academic tones or mixed up with creative metaphor that truly engaged the reader with the themes debated.
Having gained such enjoyment from the reading of academic literature, and having a certain flair within my own delivery, I am keen to help others achieve their written goals and improve their work.
Background and experience
Initially I started providing proofreading and editing services in a rather informal manner for my peers at university who were similarly engaged with the social sciences. However, on graduating, I ramped up my proofreading services for undergraduates studying across a number of Russell Group universities including Bristol and Edinburgh. More recently, I have performed proofreading services for PhD students working outside of the social sciences; I have enjoyed learning about new areas of knowledge and challenging myself in the process.
Why I love proofreading and editing
I love the satisfaction of delivering a piece of writing that, through its simplicity, reads flawlessly, and, with a certain amount of flair, truly engages the reader. I especially enjoy proofreading and editing literature across the social sciences and have particular experience working with APA and Harvard referencing styles.
Favorite book:
Life by Keith Richards
Hobbies:
I am passionate about water sports and have spent much time recently trying to nail down my latest obsession, kite surfing.
Editing tips:
When I first open a document, before I start proofreading it, I like to give the entire piece a skim read in order to get a measure of the work, the author's voice, and, most importantly, the messages it is looking to deliver.
